Liner Notes

Like many jazz composers I find myself drawn to writing for jazz orchestra – like a moth to a flame. Large ensemble projects present great challenges and yet can be immensely rewarding. The challenges: finding gigs, scheduling rehearsals and searching for funding to help stave off the financial ruin that usually results from engaging in such enterprises. But then there are the rewards: the sound made by these 18 gifted musicians who, with great patience, artistry and commitment, have put together the polished performances presented here. And they’ve been doing so since the band was formed in 2006.

The compositions chosen for this recording are most representative of where I am and of where I’ve been in my musical explorations. I trust they all speak for themselves to one degree or another, but allow me to make special mention of the two-part suite, Prayer and Celebration. The person to whom the piece is dedicated, Eddie Sossin, was a great friend and saxophonist with whom I worked with for many years on the bandstand and in an academic setting. He and I became very close over the years and this piece was composede for a memorial concert after his death in 1999. I couldn’t resist the idea of weaving together references to some of his favorite tunes, including St. Thomas, All the Things You Are, There’ll Never be Another You, The Summer of ’42, and several more. A wonderfully straight ahead player, Eddie would call most if not all of these at one point or another on a gig. The suite presents the orchestra at its most reflective and ecstatic.

The soloists are identified in the track listings because their improvisations add so much to the storytelling, but those who don’t solo here play an equally important role in the performances. This remarkable and talented group made the recording of this CD as effortless as any project I have ever been associated with.

This project could never have been completed without the support of a great many other people as well. I would like to offer special thanks to two of these: Trish Colter (the love of my life) and Joe Amato (the love of Millie’s life), who offered advice and assistance before, during and after the recording sessions. The fabulous design of this CD is the work f the amazing Kelly-Read Lyon who is a constant source of pride for her dad. Also, thanks for the wonderful photographs to Don Vickery. Finally, special thanks to Steve Bellamy who did such a magnificent job of recording and mixing this album.
